About

Rasmus Fonnesbæk Andersen

I work with governments, funders and nonprofits on what transformative AI is likely to mean for low- and middle-income countries, and what we can do about it already now.

I am a fellow at the Africa Jobs Fund, where I work on how AI could change jobs and growth across the continent. I built the AGI Growth Atlas, an interactive atlas of how 157 countries might fare under different paths of AI progress. I also take on independent advisory and research work for foundations, governments and research organisations.

I am building something new, still in stealth, on making transformative AI go well for low- and middle-income countries.

Before this, I was at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, where I helped set up its AI advisory work and advised governments in 25+ countries, including presidents’ and prime ministers’ offices, on AI strategy, adoption and governance. Before that, I spent seven years at Dalberg Advisors, where I co-led the Digital & Data Practice and worked with governments, foundations and nonprofits on digital transformation, data and inclusive growth. I chair the board of EPIC-Africa and am an angel investor with Dakar Network Angels.

I trained as a political scientist, with a PhD from the University of Copenhagen, and was a Fulbright scholar and Visiting Fellow at Harvard’s Department of Government. My research examined how much political culture can explain differences in levels of democracy and democratic transitions, by testing how culture and institutions shape each other, including in subnational regime transitions and differences in levels of democracy at the subnational level, and at the individual level when borders move and when people migrate. I’ve since turned the papers into interactive versions.

If you’re working on transformative AI in low- and middle-income countries, on AI for governments, foundations or nonprofits, or on migration for development, I’d love to hear from you.
